The construction on the titanic began on March 31st, 1909. The Titanic was supposed to be the biggest and best ships to operate in that time. The Ship was 882 feet, 9 inches long and 92 feet 6 inches wide, with a volume of 46,328 tons and a height from the water line to the boat deck of 60 feet. In it it had two four-cylinder, triple-expansion, inverted steam engines and one low-pressure Parsons turbine, which powered three propellers. There was also 29 boilers that made the speed a possible 43 kilometers per hour. On the Titanic there were four smoke stacks, but only three were really functional. The third was just for show. The Titanic featured 15 watertight compartments. If something happened, four could fill with water and the whole ship would stay afloat. Unfortunatly, that wasn't the case when the boat hit the iceberg. When five of the compartments were filled with water, the ship was bound for a watery grave.
R.M.S. Titanic was the second of three sister ships. It was bigger and better than her elder: Olympic but smaller than her younger sister: Britannic. They were all built in the same fashion but the Olympic seemed to have better luck. After the Titanic sank, the Britannic sailed. A few years later, the younger ship hit a mine and sunk. The Olympic went on to serve 24 years of service.
